Weather shifts triggers bee migration over Bali toll road: BKSDA

A transition in seasonal weather has triggered a massive migration of bees across the Bali Mandara Toll Road in Denpasar on Sunday afternoon, Bali Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) confirmed.

The unusual event was captured in a viral social media video, showing dozens of motorcyclists forced to an abrupt halt as a thick swarm clouded the path.

"Transitional seasons, scorching heat, and wind can trigger the migration of bee colonies to more favorable locations,"  Head of the Bali BKSDA Ratna Hendratmoko noted on Sunday.

He explained that entomological studies indicate bees possess complex adaptation mechanisms to environmental shifts, particularly changes in weather and body temperature that depend on external conditions.

The migration is a natural effort by the colony to locate new nesting sites when their previous habitats become unsuitable due to shifts in temperature, humidity, or external disturbances.

"This phenomenon can also be studied from an ecological perspective as a form of organism response to ecosystem dynamics," Hendratmoko added.

The Bali Mandara Toll Road is situated near the Ngurah Rai mangrove forest in Benoa Bay, which serves as a natural habitat for insects that rely on nectar from mangrove flowers.

The agency noted that the toll road’s infrastructure, including its underpasses, provides an appealing temporary shelter from rain, high winds, and extreme heat while offering protection from predators.

"This phenomenon is not unusual; it is part of the bees' adaptation process to environmental changes and generally occurs quickly," Hendratmoko pointed out.

Despite the dramatic footage of toll officers directing traffic as the motorcycle lane was temporarily blocked, officials confirmed that no serious injuries or fatalities occurred.

"For now, there are no reports of fatalities or serious injuries due to the incident, and traffic conditions remain under control, although there was some slowdown," the BKSDA head confirmed.

Authorities have advised the public to remain calm and avoid panic if they encounter swarms.

Motorcyclists are encouraged to slow down, wear full protective gear, and strictly refrain from any actions that could provoke the bees, such as swatting at them or attempting to drive the swarm away.
