Man Utd news: Kobbie Mainoo transfer builds momentum as Ruben Amorim reality clear
Manchester United are already being linked with several potential transfers ahead of the January window.
While Ruben Amorim's main aim is to extend his team's four-match unbeaten streak in the Premier League, plans for United's transfer activity are undoubtedly being drawn up behind closed doors.
The Red Devils' winning run came to an end with a draw against Nottingham Forest at the weekend, but this hasn't entirely derailed their momentum. Amorim is getting performances out of his squad, although not all players are hitting their stride.
Benjamin Sesko is one player who has recently faced criticism for not making as significant an impact as fellow newcomers Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo. However, the forward played the full 90 minutes against Forest, unlike some of his United team-mates who are struggling for consistent game time.
The reality is clear for Amorim, who has already conceded that he expects some players will request to leave the club in January, and one United star has been linked with a move to Napoli. The Italian side have successfully rejuvenated the careers of both Scott McTominay and current United loanee Rasmus Hojlund since they departed Old Trafford.
Here, the Daily Star Sport looks at the latest headlines at Old Trafford.
Kobbie Mainoo rumoured for Napoli switch
Sky Sport Italia has reported that Napoli are eyeing a move for Kobbie Mainoo in the January transfer window. The 20-year-old midfielder, who requested a loan move over the summer, is yet to start a league match this season.
United reportedly have no plans to sell Mainoo permanently but would rather see him join a foreign club instead of another Premier League team. Napoli are keen to strengthen their midfield following an injury to Kevin De Bruyne and are interested in taking Mainoo on loan with an option to buy.
This could lead to United repeating past mistakes where they've allowed players to move to Napoli, only to see them flourish in Italy. United's loanee Rasmus Hojlund has netted four goals in eight matches this season, while former midfielder McTominay was crowned Serie A MVP last term.
Gary Lineker weighs in on Benjamin Sesko issue
Gary Lineker seems to agree with suggestions that Benjamin Sesko has had a slow start at Manchester United - although the ex-Match of the Day presenter remains confident that the forward will find his feet. The young striker, signed from RB Leipzig in the summer, has only managed to score twice in 11 outings.
Sesko's recent performance against Forest drew criticism from United legend Gary Neville. However, Lineker has been impressed by United's new attacking line-up and believes Sesko still has more to offer.
"One thing I would say is that their recruitment for the first time in some time looks pretty good," Lineker commented on the Rest is Football podcast. "Cunha looks a really good player and Mbeumo looks a really good player.
"Sesko I think might show something, I think he is promising, so I think it has been better recruitment, but time will tell on that as well."
Gareth Southgate speaks out about his future
Former England boss Gareth Southgate has opened up about the possibility of returning to management. Southgate guided the Three Lions to two Euros finals during his stint before stepping down last year.
He was recently rumoured to be in the running for the United job prior to the club's recent improvement in form. However, Southgate has confessed he's not desperate for a comeback to management.
"I had an amazing time [as England manager]," Southgate told the BBC. "Obviously the great thing with England was there is the high purpose that you are ... you know, I joined the FA to try to help English football to become better, to help youth development, in particular.
"I somehow stumbled and ended up in the first-team manager's job, and we had a pretty good period. But I am not desperate to stay in football. I have had 37 years in football.
"You can never say never, because I have just seen Martin ONeill at his age go to Celtic, but it is not something that is high on my agenda at the moment."
