Man Utd defender made available for transfer despite emerging as a leader under Ruben Amorim
Ineos have cleared out the soccer department at Old Trafford, and now it’s up to Dan Ashworth, Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox to work together to overhaul much of the squad.
Manchester United finished 14th last term in the Premier League, suffering their worst season in Premier League history.
For the first time in three years, the manager had no excuses in terms of fitness problems, with a fairly clean bill of health throughout the squad and so the pressure fell on the personnel at their disposal.
As a result, three new signings are expected to come through the door before pre-season, with Diogo Dalot another to depart – per United in Focus – despite them being a leader in the dressing room and often starting for Ruben Amorim.
Manchester United prepared to sell Diogo Dalot leadership exit
Ruben Amorim, whilst struggling at times in 2025 to get his side playing his brand of football, did well to build a core group of players willing to implement his vision and Dalot was certainly one of them.
However, despite often starting for the manager and becoming a leader in the dressing room, Dalot was reportedly told by Wilcox in May that he was free to look for a new club.
And now, United as per a report from HITC Sport, have extended the option to Dalot’s representatives, with clubs across Europe seemingly still interested in bringing him in – with Bayern Munich mentioned specifically last winter.
Amorim last season used a back-three system consisting of Dalot and Alejandro Balde as his two wing-backs, without much depth beyond them.
However, neither could play as the fourth centre-back for United, who had a distinct lack of versatility to switch to a back-four when needed. It’s why Mazraoui was wanted as he can play multiple roles and allow for greater flexibility.
This left Dalot outside of the first-choice eleven under the Portuguese boss, making a sale a logical move for all parties. Even as a strong squad option, their leadership qualities won’t be enough to keep them in the squad next season.
His position will see players expected to replace both him and Balde next season, leaving little room for the Portuguese right-back.
