Alexander Isak told to reject Arsenal and Liverpool for Premier League rival
Alexander Isak has been urged to join Chelsea this summer, with former Premier League star Gus Poyet suggesting he would be a "good fit" at Stamford Bridge. Isak is one of the most in-demand players in world football right now, having starred for Newcastle since joining the club in 2022.
The 25-year-old has scored 59 goals in 103 games for the Toon and the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool have all been linked with the striker. However, Poyet believes Isak should join Chelsea instead.
"I would like to see Alexander Isak at Chelsea," the ex-Chelsea midfielder told Discasino. "I know him from his time at Real Sociedad and I know his characteristics, movement, and technical ability, and I think he'd be a good fit at Chelsea.
"I also think Nicolas Jackson needs competition up front – if you want to be the number 9 at Chelsea, you need to be better than how he's currently performing.
'Sometimes to get better you need more of a challenge – it didn't work out with Christopher Nkunku up front, so Jackson needs someone else to try and push him. Isak can be that player."
However, Newcastle remain determined to keep hold of their star striker and it will take a blockbuster offer to even tempt them to sell, with Isak still under contract until June 2028.
And Newcastle boss Eddie Howe is confident that Isak will still be at St James' Park next season. "He's had a brilliant couple of seasons for us and he looks like he's hitting his best rhythm now," Howe said in December.
"He's such a valuable player for us. When I signed him I looked at his game in depth. With Alex, his all-round game, I felt he could do a little bit of everything - dropping deep to link play, being a creative link between our midfield and our attack, but also bring those stand-out qualities individually where he can make something happen out of nothing.
"He had, from that one season where he scored a huge amount of goals in LaLiga - which at such a young age isn't easy to do. I believed he had the prowess to deliver that into the Premier League, albeit there's always a slight question mark with the physicality of this league.
"And that's where I have to give him a huge compliment because he's made that step from the various leagues that he's been in to come to the Premier League. I think he's done really well, he's almost taken everything in his stride.
"We wouldn't have committed the fee that we did to the transfer if we didn't believe that he could play and do well straight away. Now, he's done that and he deserves a lot of credit for it because it's not an easy thing to do, to transfer leagues in the way that he has, and I just hope it's a start for him.
"The challenge for the team is to be successful. With a successful team, everything is easier across the board in every respect. The challenge for me is to push the team to those heights."
